rogers removals

Moving to a new home is a considerable investment both in terms of time and money, so it’s only natural to want to cut costs down as much as possible. Many movers are offering very low-cost removals services. But is this really the best service? Or the best option?

Today we give you six reasons why cheaper isn’t always better when it comes to removals services.

1- They’re rarely professional movers

Some movers are often doing removals as side gigs and may lack the professionalism of established companies.

A reputable removals company will belong to the British Association of Removers, which sets standards of service for removal and storage services. Members are audited in all areas ranging from fair terms and conditions to customer service and including operations, vehicle maintenance, and estimates – all for your own benefit.

2- They’re not prepared for entire house removals

Low-cost removal services often rely on smaller 3.5ton vans. This type of van may be suitable if you’re a student moving your bedroom’s belongings. But would all of your home’s furniture, equipment, personal possessions, exercise equipment, etc. fit in a small van? Or will they end up making a dozen trips to complete your move – much to the annoyance of others in your chain?

3- They may not be insured

When choosing a company to help you out with your home move, it’s important to think not only about your budget but also (and more importantly) about what will happen if things go wrong. Because many low-cost movers are not professional movers, they will not be insured. This means that your hands will be tied if something gets damaged or missing during the move.

4- Inclusions, exclusions, and the fine print

In many cases, all you need to do to hire a low-cost removal service is to make a phone call and agree on a time and date. You may be given a ballpark figure, but do you know what’s included in the price and what isn’t? For example, will they handle heavy or fragile items? Can they help with packing and packing materials? What happens if they cancel the service? Are payments protected? Also, there may be hidden charges that you’ll only become aware of once you have a final bill in your hands.

5- Customer service isn’t their forte

When you hire a low-cost remover, you’ll often only have a mobile phone number as a point of contact. Mobiles can be switched off, out of battery, or unreachable when you need it the most. Not having dedicated customer service rep can add unnecessary stress and frustration to the moving process. By contrast, professional movers offer a customer service line where you can direct enquiries, problems, and complaints.

6- They may not be trustworthy nor performing consistently well

We often receive calls from people asking for help on the day of their move when they realise the mover they have booked isn’t going to turn up. Low-cost movers will often drop a move if they get a new booking that they can earn more from. Or, they may not have a grip on their own costs at the time of quoting and they later realise that they’ve quoted below cost price – we see this often.

We always recommend that you choose a removal company that is;

  • A registered member of BAR (British Association of Removers)
  • Local to you – the closer, the better
  • Recommended by friends/family
  • Familiar to you – have you seen their trucks?
  • Well established

Choose a remover that gives you confidence and never choose a remover on price alone. – Dennis Rogers
